Andre de Cavaignac

Let's blog it out...

Tip for all you IE7 users (search key command)...

Just a quick tip:

In IE 7, a new "search box" was introduced in the top/right corner.  This box usually has a default search provider that searches when you hit enter, and a list of search providers you can use other times by clicking the "down" button next to the spyglass.

I just (trying to think of what the key command is to open the menu), tried "ctrl+down" to get the menu open and it works!  (You know you're a geek when you can guess the key command to do someting and get it on the first try... But at least I'm a cool geek and share with others).

Try this:  type a search (like "Cavaignac") click "ctrl+down", use the arrow keys to select a search provider and hit enter.

A few search providers I use:

  • Yahoo
  • Wikipedia (a must)
  • Facebook

You know you're a geek? Or you know the person who developed it knows a thing or two about user-friendly UI's? :)

I actually have been using this shortcut for a while. I didn't guess it but I saw it on a MSDN blog or something... now it just seems as natural as ALT+TAB to me. I know there's a way to get to the search box too but I can't remember it.

Oh ok duh... should have read the tool tip... It's CTL+E. Now that's unintuitive.
